2nd Active NFL Player Publicly Supports Medical Marijuana

Derrick Morgan of the Tennessee Titans became the second active NFL player to publicly support medical marijuana and encourage the league to study the drug’s potential long-term health benefits. The move is significant given former Baltimore Ravens player Eugene Monroe who announced support for the drug research and was cut from the team a month later, although officials stated that the decision to do so wasn’t related to his marijuana advocacy.

“I feel like the NFL has a responsibility to look into it, to delegate time and money to research this for its players,” Morgan told Yahoo Global News. “Given how much influence that the NFL has on society, I think it would help the greater good. There’s a lot of people suffering and a lot of people that can benefit from cannabis as a medical treatment.”

In 2010, Morgan was a first round draft pick and recorded 27.5 sacks for the Titans in 76 career games. In 2015, he signed a four year $27 million contract with $10.5 million guaranteed, but his season was cut short by a shoulder injury that kept him out of practice.

“In thinking of the benefits that will come from spreading the awareness and the knowledge about this substance, I think greatly outweighs any backlash or ramifications that might come about it,” he told Yahoo. “It’s about not only us, but former players, future players and more so society as a whole.”

In the end, the move shows that the tides are continuing to change when it comes to medical marijuana and athletics where there could be substantial benefits to players.
