In today’s fast-growing legal marijuana space, conferences and events are an essential backbone, providing educational and networking opportunities for everyone from eager entrepreneurs with the next big idea to C-Suite level executives representing large multi-state operators. While the “canna-expo” space has become increasingly crowded as legalization spreads across the nation and the world, one show has cemented its place as a must-attend.

The National Cannabis Industry Association’s (NCIA) annual Cannabis Business Summit and Expo, held last week in San Jose, California, brings together a venerable “who’s who” of marijuana with nearly 10,000 attendees streaming through the McEnery Convention Center. Over 400 exhibitors filled the main hall while around 150 dynamic speakers presented on topics ranging from best cultivation practices to canna-branding and everything in between. CFN Media filmed exclusive interviews with top executives and thought leaders in conjunction with the associated CannaVest West series (click here to visit the CannaVest video library!).

CFN Media host Greg Hasty interviews former Canopy Growth CEO, Bruce Linton, at the Cannabis Business Summit & Expo

“Walking out on that floor, you feel like you’re in a physics lab,” remarked Morgan Fox, Media Relations Director for the NCIA. “Just the level of innovation and connection that is happening here is wonderful, and it’s something that I haven’t seen in any other trade shows.”

One of the most-talked about and hotly anticipated speeches was that of former Canopy Growth CEO Bruce Linton, in his first public appearance since his ousting. The cannabis industry vet, now considering his next moves, offered his two-cents on the market at-large and what he thinks it will take to survive.

“Right now, to be a U.S. entrepreneur in the cannabis space is a bit like having two hands and one leg tied behind your back, and the rest of the world is making it faster and easier, and grabbing up the IP,” Linton told CFN Media. “It’s got to be viewed as, ‘how much of a disadvantage over the next generation do we want to install by not allowing people to really have a platform to create all the IP and to create all the durable value?’”

NCIA, the industry’s largest and most prominent trade group, utilizes any and all profits from their events to help support their federal policy work. The group holds annual “Lobby Days” where members gather in Washington, D.C. to push Congress to approve legislation such as the SAFE Banking Act and the STATES Act, both of which would offer tremendous and sweeping protections for the nascent industry.

Adding to the well-rounded programming was the CannaVest West series, which highlighted critical developments for investors and offered start-ups the chance to pitch to potential funders. Meanwhile, the associated Hemp Biz Conference drew visitors curious about how the Farm Bill of 2018 changed the landscape of hemp – and how to cash in.

Next year’s Cannabis Business Summit will be held in San Francisco, a move meant to reflect the Bay Area’s designation as the epicenter of the California cannabis market. Despite this West Coast-centric notion, delegates attend the annual event from all over the globe.

“I think that the fact that people are willing to come from around the country to these sort of events in order to network and develop their skill sets and make connections in the industry is really telling of the potential for how far we can go,” adds Fox. “And as more and more states pass laws, and as we get closer to ending federal prohibition, we’re only going to see this increase.”
