Cannabis Industry Rallies Around Weed for Warriors

Many veterans suffer from a variety of different issues following their combat tours, ranging from post traumatic stress disorder to amputation-related pain. While cannabis has been used for centuries to remedy both physical and psychological pain, VA doctors cannot legally prescribe or even discuss the use of the drug under restrictive federal laws. Veterans must instead rely on addictive painkillers and dangerous psychotropic medications to treat pain.
The Weed for Warriors project was created to advocate to the Veteran Affairs Administration on behalf of all veterans for the use of medical marijuana as a recognized alternative to harmful psychiatric drugs without any discrimination or unjust actions against the individual. Earlier this year, the group was successful in pushing the Veterans Equal Access Amendment through the Senate, but the amendment still requires support to pass into law.
The Veterans Equal Access Amendment blocks the VA from using funds to enforce the ban on VA doctors, which effectively opens the door for doctors to prescribe medical cannabis. While becoming the first cannabis legislation to pass the Senate, the bill faced significant opposition in the House where it was twice-blocked. The rising tide of legalization and the support of the Weed for Warriors project could help it finally pass into law.
The advocacy group supported the legislation through its Cannaball Run for Vets 2015 tour, which began in California on October 17th and ended in Washington DC on November 11th. In the nation’s capital, the group dumped hundreds of pill bottles near the White House to signal veterans’ dependence on narcotics, while planting 22 flags representing the average number of daily suicides by veterans – far more than those killed in combat.
Moving forward, the group is looking to raise additional funds to support the development of a documentary covering the Cannaball Run and continue its efforts to pass the Veterans Equal Access Amendment and other legislation.
BioTrackTHC, a provider of medical cannabis dispensary software, recently announced a campaign to raise funds for the Weeds for Warriors project. In addition to an online campaign, the group will run an awareness campaign through the 1,400+ dispensaries in its network.
Cannabis companies interested in joining these efforts can setup their own online campaigns using Everyday Hero, support existing campaigns, or raise awareness with hash tags like #forwarriors and #wfwp on social media outlets. If 100 companies raise $1,000 a piece, that’s $100,000 worth of funding to make real change for millions of people.
