Colorado Could Pioneer Public Cannabis Smoking Venues

Cannabis advocates in Colorado have been pushing for a measure on the November 2016 ballot that would permit the public consumption of cannabis in certain bars and restaurants. In particular, the measure would have legalized the drug’s use in certain adult-only businesses like nightclubs or bars, while permitting edible or vaporized marijuana to be consumed indoors and smoke-able marijuana to be consumed in outdoor areas blocked from public view.

The legalization of adult-use marijuana in Colorado, Washington, and other states came with the caveat that it could not be consumed in public spaces. With the distinct smell of marijuana, potential exposure to minors, and possible “hot box contact highs”, officials were worried that public consumption along the lines of cigarettes could open the door to a host of potential problems down the road, which is why the restrictions were put into place.

According to the New York Times, the group pulled the measure in early September, saying that they may be able to reach an agreement with the City of Denver on the topic. The group – which spent nearly $20,000 on the measure to date – said that it’s looking to reach an agreement with the city about legalizing the consumption of marijuana in limited public spaces, although no details were offered and it’s too early to know what compromise was reached.

Cannabis consumers that don’t want to consume the drug at home must currently either go to a friend’s house or visit a limited number of marijuana-friendly bed and breakfast establishments that permit the drug’s consumption. Bars, nightclubs, and cafes (like Amsterdam’s cafes) are not permitted to allow the drug due to the potential for customers to unintentionally be exposed to the drug from patrons.

In the end, the move could mark another big step forward to the industry if it’s legalized in certain public establishments, which could open the door to a wider customer base and more normalized environments.
