Full Spectrum: The Next Revolution in Extraction

The cannabis industry has rapidly matured over the past few years as legalization has swept North America and other parts of the world. While cannabis flower and distillates dominated the early market, patient and consumer preferences have shifted toward higher-quality products that provide more benefits—such as full-spectrum cannabis oils.

Let’s take a look at the difference between distillate and full-spectrum cannabis oil and how to invest in the next revolution in extraction.

What Are Distillates?

Distillate is cannabis oil that has been heavily refined and separated into cannabinoid fractions. After extracting the raw cannabis oil, cannabinoids are separated out by their molecular weight using a short path distillation system. These cannabinoids are often combined with terpenes and flavorings and sold in vape cartridges or other products.

Many cannabis oil manufacturers prefer distillates because they are predictable and relatively cheap to produce since they can be made with low-potency materials (e.g. trim). In addition, distillate oil can be easily combined with artificial flavors to mask poor taste and/or standardize a product to make it highly predictable for consumers.

The problem with distillate is that it only contains specific cannabinoids. New research has underscored the benefits of the so-called entourage effect whereby all components of the cannabis plant act together to create a high or support overall wellness. The over-expression of any single cannabinoid could have adverse impacts, such as paranoia or anxiety.

What is Full-Spectrum?

Full-spectrum cannabis oil contains a wide variety of cannabis compounds, including cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids and other micro- compounds. Using supercritical CO2 extraction, cannabis oil manufacturers can extract a much wider range of compounds to provide these benefits to consumers in vape cartridges or other formats.

Unlike distillate, full-spectrum cannabis oil is more difficult to produce and requires high-quality input materials, such as full bud, high-potency, terpene-rich flower since the taste more closely resembles the plant inputs. The good news is that these full-spectrum cannabis oils are premium products that can often be sold at a higher margin.

The term full-spectrum is not regulated by any industry body, which means that all full-spectrum products aren’t equal. In other words, full spectrum doesn’t have the same requirements as a word like ‘organic’ in the food industry. Consumers and product manufacturers must carefully vet where they acquire cannabis oil to ensure quality.

Investing in the Trend

There are several publicly traded cannabis companies, but only a handful are pure-plays in extraction. Of those companies, only a few specialize in the production of full-spectrum cannabis oil rather than producing simple distillates. Investors may want to take a closer look at these companies given the industry’s shifting focus.

Pure Extract Technologies Inc. is actively preparing to list on the Canadian Stock Exchange (CSE) under the ticker symbol ‘PULL’. With a facility designed to EU-GMP specifications and cutting-edge CO2 extraction equipment, the Company operates on the leading edge of the full-spectrum cannabis oil revolution, developing both in-house and white-label solutions for the industry.

The Company has already signed agreements with Licensed Producers to procure biomass and toll process that biomass into cannabis oil. In addition to the high-margin, recurring revenue of toll processing, the Company is developing its own in-house brands that it plans on selling into the market, providing investors with blue sky potential.

Looking Ahead

Cannabis extraction is maturing from simple distillates to high-quality full-spectrum cannabis oils. Investors looking to capitalize on these trends may want to take a look at Pure Extract Technologies Inc., as an upcoming pure-play on full-spectrum cannabis extraction.

In addition to cannabis, Pure Extracts has recently announced plans to move into mushroom extraction. The rise in demand for psilocybin and other functional mushroom products to address mental health disorders is rapidly creating a horizontal market that the Company could expand into with little investment and significant scale.
