How the Cannabis Industry is Celebrating 4/20 at a Distance

The cannabis industry’s biggest events typically take place on its unofficial holiday — 4/20. Of course, these events have become another casualty of the COVID-19 outbreak as states continue to enforce social distancing rules. There will be no cannabis festivals, protests at state capitols or concerts taking place in-person this year.
Let’s take a look at how cannabis enthusiasts and other are spending their 4/20 at a distance.
Edibles Become Essential
Cannabis edibles are becoming an increasingly popular alternative to smokable cannabis as the COVID-19 respiratory virus spreads. Edibles provide the same psychoactive effects as smoking without inflaming the lungs at a time when they may already be susceptible to a COVID-19 infection (many physicians advise against smoking or vaping anything).
Cannabis Deliveries Soar
The COVID-19 crisis hasn’t shut down dispensaries — as they are considered “essential services” — but most consumers prefer to purchase products by delivery where it’s available. After record-setting volumes in March, cannabis deliveries are likely to soar in April from the 4/20 holiday. Weedmaps anticipates four to five times more demand than is typical on 4/20.
If you’re getting cannabis by delivery on 4/20 (or any day), remember to tip your delivery driver as they put their life on the line to earn a living during this public health crisis.
Cannabis Events Go Virtual
Past 4/20 events have drawn huge crowds. While some events have been canceled or delayed this year, others have moved online and cannabis enthusiasts can tune in at home. Snoop Dogg is having a 4/20 Smoke-in on Merry Jane’s Instragram while 420 for a Cause is focused on raising money for the Colorado Restaurant Association and others hit hard by the pandemic.
Some other virtual events to check out include:
- Highstream 420 Festival
- The Great American Sesh In
- Willie Nelson’s ‘Come and Toke It’
- One World: Together at Home
Cannabis Users Get Creative
Most of us have already dramatically changed the way that we interact with friends — and 4/20 has simply become an extension of these trends. From video chatting on Zoom to virtual games with Jackbox Party Packs, there are many different ways that people have found ways to socialize without having to meet each other in-person.
Some other ideas for a virtual 4/20 include:
- Cannabis Cooking Challenges (Recipes)
- Watching a Movie Together (Netflix Party)
- Social Cannabis Games (Higher Thought)
Cannabis Activists Go Online
Many cannabis enthusiasts have used 4/20 as a day to promote legalization. The Marijuana Policy Project, Drug Policy Alliance, and countless local organizations provide ways that you can promote sensible drug policy from home. These efforts might include everything from reaching out to your representatives to raising money to support these efforts.
The Bottom Line
The COVID-19 crisis has dramatically upended the life of everyone. While 4/20 won’t draw the big crowds of past years, the industry expects to see record sales and cannabis enthusiasts are finding creative ways to connect with each other on this unofficial holiday.
