The legal marijuana industry is ramping up at a pace not seen since the dot com boom, with a projected value in the tens of billions of dollars within a few short years. At the recent Cannabis Private Investment Summit in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Kahner Global invited top industry executives, thought leaders, and experts to discuss the most critical issues and topics currently facing investors in this space. Hosted by Greenspoon Marder and emceed by JJ McKay of The Fresh Toast, this highly exclusive, daylong event drew a curated list of ultra high net worth individuals and family offices seeking to be on the cutting-edge of this fast-growing market.

“Kahner Global events bring together teams of collaborators and thought leaders for a productive and enjoyable boutique experience,” said Kimberly Macleod, Founder of kmacconnect pr, and Kahner Global PR Partner. ”We were delighted to welcome so many new and veteran investors and cannabis industry professionals for an enlightening and informative day of panels, pitches and presentations.”

The Summit began with breakfast and networking, immediately followed by an engaging panel designed to bring attendees up to speed on the current state of the legal industry and an update on hemp-based cannabidiol extraction. However, it was the midday pitch competition that drew some of the most thrilling moments of the event. Six unique startups had only seven minutes to impress a three-judge tribunal – and a room full of potentially interested investors.

Presenting companies included cultivation equipment manufacturer Hyperponic, vertically-integrated retail brand Saku, a Latin-American focused cannabis company called VerdeMed, Canadian cannabis beer, wine, and spirits innovator Province Brands, premium cannabis cigarette maker Toast, and PISTIL, another Canadian company aiming to convert tobacco farmers in the American Southeast to CBD hemp cultivation.

“A friend of mine who’s a very sophisticated investor informed me of Kahner Global’s events; I first pitched at their Toronto Summit and had a great time,” explains pitch contest winner Greg Vermeulen, the Co-Founder and CEO of PISTIL. “I thought the Ft. Lauderdale trip would be nice and it certainly paid off. The reception from the audience was fantastic.”

After a catered lunch in the sprawling Greenspoon Marder lounge, keynote presenter Riley Cote spoke about his personal journey with medical cannabis. The former NHL enforcer has become an outspoken advocate for the plant since his retirement.

“Promoting cannabis has emerged as my personal mission. It can be used as a sustainable source of nutrition, as a green building material, and as a way to improve mental well-being,” Cote told CFN. “It was a go-to comfort that helped with my anxiety and injuries during my hockey career, but now I recognize that its benefits can extend well beyond that and help many active and retired athletes who are living an unhealthy lifestyle. Despite appearances, many have a poor diet based on processed foods and rely on opioids to deal with the aches and pains that come from being a professional athlete. Cannabis offers a healthier alternative, and I want to educate them about its virtues. I am a better person now than I could have imagined and look forward to putting my energies into the three cannabis wellness organizations my partners and I have formed: BodyChek Wellness, Athletes for Care and Hemp Heals.”

The rest of the afternoon included more high level programming dedicated on topics such as building cannabis brands, international investments, and public vs. private arbitrage. The Summit was capped off with a cocktail reception where attendees and speakers mingled, topping off an active day of deal flow. Now, it’s all eyes on La La Land, as Kahner Global brings their “CannaBrunch” to Beverly Hills on May 1st.

“This was a ‘top of the line’ event; I was able to see old associates and network with new investors, members of family offices, and accredited investors,” raved Khadijah Adams, VP of business development firm CE Hutton. “My hat’s off to the entire Kahner Global team for a job well done – totally worth the trip!”
