Majority of Young Republicans Support Legalization

The opposition to the legalization of medical and recreational marijuana is an interesting demographic. In general, Democrats tend to support legalization given their liberal stance, while Republicans tend to oppose legalization given their conservative stance. The problem is that some Republicans identify as laissez-faire capitalists, which means they believe in a limited government that shouldn’t meddle in individual matters (like smoking).

A new survey by Pew Research Center suggests that the Republican opposition may be even further divided based on age, with 60% of Millennial Republicans polling in favor of the legalization of marijuana. Interestingly, the same survey found that nearly half of Generation-X Republicans hold a similar viewpoint, leaving the majority of the opposition in the older pre-GenX generation – a group that still has a lot of political sway.

These strong feelings could bring the issue of marijuana legalization into the limelight during the 2016 Presidential campaigns. According to the Pew Research Center report, “The debate over marijuana also comes ahead of the 2016 presidential election, when both political parties are fighting over the coveted Millennial vote as this group of eligible voters swells in size, even if its members do not consistently show up on Election Day.”

Similar polling figures were seen a year ago when polling support for same-sex marriages, which have since been legalized in the United States. While they issues may not be comparable, the data suggests that politicians tend to change their own viewpoints to match those of voters, particularly Millennial voters that constitute an increasingly large percentage of the population and hold a lot of sway when it comes to elections.

Many legalization advocates are hoping to see the issue come into the limelight during the 2016 Election, since it could spur the federal government into taking action and ultimately reshape the industry.
