Most U.S. Citizens Support Legalization, Says New Poll

The majority of U.S. citizens (51%) support the legalization of marijuana, while only 37% oppose the idea. In addition, 54% of those polled believe that the federal government should tolerate state laws legalizing marijuana, despite the fact that it’s still prohibited at a federal level, while only 29% believe that the federal government should prevent state-level legalization, according to a new YouGov poll.

While federal legalization has a significant divide along party lines – with 62% of Democrats supporting legalization and 51% of Republicans opposed, there’s not a particularly large partisan split on whether state’s should be permitted to legalize with 49% of Republicans and 55% of Democrats saying that the federal government shouldn’t interfere with state laws legalizing marijuana.

The poll results are even more interesting when it comes to specific states like Colorado, which have legalized recreational marijuana. Some 61% of U.S. citizens said they supported Colorado’s law, including 68% of Democrats, 60% of Independents, and 52% of Republicans. The law makes marijuana legal, but applies a heavy tax and regulates the sale to people 21 years or older within the state.

The sale of recreational marijuana began at the start of the year in Colorado and last Tuesday in Washington State. Other states are expected to join the decriminalization wave, including Oregon and Alaska, who have ballot measures in place this year. Washington D.C. has also passed a city law decriminalizing marijuana, although the law has been contested in Congress and remains relatively uncertain.

Of course, there are still many concerns and hurdles associated with the legalization of marijuana. The same poll found that the majority (53%) of respondents believe that legalization will increase marijuana use among youth, while remaining uncertain (39% versus 38%) about whether or not legalization will impact road safety in terms of people driving under the influence.
