New Federal Bill Could Accelerate Cannabis Research

Marijuana advocates are working on a new amendment that would create a new federal sub-category for the cannabis plant and make it easier to conduct future research about the plant’s medical efficacy when it comes to treating a number of diseases.

The amendment to the 21st Century Cures Act (HR 6) – a bill that accelerates the discovery and development of new medicines – would facilitate credible research on the medical efficacy of marijuana and encourage the National Institutes of Health the Drug Enforcement Administration to work together on marijuana research. Lawmakers will be debating the amendment to the bill in the House of Representatives later this week.

“Given the widespread use of medical marijuana, it is imperative that doctors better understand how it can be used to treat different people and conditions, as well as the risks involved,” said Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.), one of the amendment’s sponsors, to The Huffington Post. “Our amendment shows members of Congress with widely varying views on marijuana policy are united in support of building a robust body of scientific information.”

Currently, marijuana is listed as a Schedule I Controlled Substance, which the DEA considers to have no medical value and the highest potential for abuse – alongside other drugs like heroin and LSD. If the amendment passes, marijuana would be classified under a new sub-category called Schedule I-R. It’s unclear what the effects the reclassification would have on research, but advocates view the move as a crucial step in the right direction.

More than 20 states have legalized marijuana for medical purposes and 14 others have legalized the limited medical use of CBD – or cannabidiol – a compound found within the cannabis plant.
