Police Veteran Stars in Oregon’s Cannabis Legalization Ad Campaign

Advocates for the legalization of cannabis in Oregon launched a $2 million advertising campaign featuring a 33-year police veteran. Pete Tutmark, a former patrol sergeant and deputy sheriff, criticized the “broken” system that diverts resources from important crime solving to drug arrests and encouraged Oregonians to vote “yes” on Measure 91 during the upcoming November elections.

The ad began running on Wednesday and has been scheduled to air during newscasts of several local TV stations, including affiliates of every major broadcast network. As the first ad aired on television by the Yes on 91 Campaign, the advocacy group is hoping that the endorsement helps sway voters after similar endorsements by retired a Chief Federal Prosecutor and Supreme Court Justice.

According to a recent poll by SurveyUSA of nearly 700 registered voters, roughly 44% support the legalization measure compared to 40% that oppose it. These dynamics could yield a narrow race as the November elections move closer.
